Secrets Abound in Missing Lake
Luke Houser is approaching his sixteenth birthday as well as summer vacation in the tiny mountain community of Missing Lake. He continues to try to find balance between real life with friends and their social requirements with the secret world of the mystical dragons. Luke faces challenges with one of his beloved sled dogs as well as with Zagros, the majestic silver dragon, when he has to make choices that could lead to potential disaster. As the summer unfolds, so do more secrets in all aspects of Luke's life and he tries to make sense of everything happening around him. This is the third book in the series which shares Luke's awkward and yet charming journey through adolescence with his beloved team of huskies, his friends near and far, and two dragon eggs that are going to hatch in the middle of nowhere.

I have a secret...I have been in love with dragons for as long as I can remember. I played Peter, Paul, and Mary’s song ‘Puff the Magic Dragon’ to the point that the vinyl wore out. I still love the song. Peter Yarrow was here in Vancouver, promoting his new book, ‘Puff the Magic Dragon’. My husband, Bill and I were the only adults in the store without children. LOL! We had to meet Peter Yarrow! I love all of his music but he is the one who sparked my imagination with dragons!
When Tanya Fyfe approached me to review her book ‘Secrets Abound Missing Lake’, I jumped at the chance. I only had to see the dragons on the cover, to want to read it. I normally don’t choose books to read from the cover. I also only very occasionally read children’s and young adult books.
‘Secrets Abound In Missing Lake’ lives up to the cover!
Luke is a teenager who has lived through his parents’ divorce and being moved around. They lived in Vancouver, BC, Canada, where his mother still lives but then he moves with his father to Bismarck North Dakota. He settles in and makes friends only to move again with his father and step-mother, Jackie to Missing Lake, Montana. The move was to raise sled dogs and compete in competitions. It was also to give Jackie a less stressful veterinary practice. Luckily, Luke is very likable and makes new friends again.
Luke also is chosen by a dragon, Zagros to be his friend and overseer. Zagros and his mate Tabatha are also about to become parents, when their two eggs hatch. There are only a few people who know about the dragon’s existence and it must be kept a secret to protect them. Luke can’t even tell his best friend or mother. Luckily his father and Jackie know about them so he has someone to talk to about them.
‘Secrets Abound In Missing Lake’ is a delightful coming of age story. It is full of well written characters that jump off the page. The descriptions of Vancouver, Bismarck, and Missing Lake really set up the story. I totally got lost in this book and didn’t want it to end. This is book three in the ‘Missing Lake’ series and I can hardly wait for book 4. It can easily be read without reading the first two books but I plan to read them next because I loved this book so much!

Dragons Abound in Missing Lake!
In the small, isolated town of Missing Lake, Montana, there lives a fifteen year old boy, his dad and his step mother.
They live with a team of sled dogs, and several "indoor" pets, as well as with a secret.
What is the secret? It is the pair of dragons who live deep in a cave near them, who are busy caring for their two dragon eggs! The eggs are going to hatch by the end of the book.
Luke is the fifteen year old narrator of this charming book. He is the Dragoneer for one of the dragons. This means they have a special attachment. Luke can converse with the dragons inside his mind. To be a Dragoneer is a very important position and a big responsibility for anyone, let alone a teen Luke's age.
Fortunately, his stepmother Jackie is a veterinarian in town. She has trained knowledge and healing talents which allow her to help out in many situations.
The family is a very normal one. Your teen will enjoy reading about the trials and tribulations of Luke as he goes through attempts to obtain his driver's license (he turns sixteen toward the end of the book), his agonies over dealing with girls, and his friendships with his good friends.
Most of all, you will all love reading about the dragons! When the baby dragons hatch it is very exciting. Jackie's veterinary skills are needed at one point. It is a race to preserve this rare breed of creature. Will she guess right? Will Luke be able to help her sufficiently? Read on and find out.
The ending of this book is very rewarding and may even make you cry.
Secrets Abound in Missing Lake is that rare book which has no R rated language, no jaded or hurtful aspects. Its hero is just a wonderful boy whose heart belongs to his dragon, his friends, and his dogs.
If you or your teenager would like to read about Luke as he progresses from spring into the summer of his sixteenth year, and all the events which happen to him during this time period, you will love this book.
I have not read the first two books of this trilogy but it didn't matter. All my questions were answered as I read along. The natural quality of Luke, who is a great kid, bursts through on every page. Secrets Abound in Missing Lake is funny, it's exciting, and it's lots of fun. Most of all, you are going to believe that the dragons exist. However, this isn't all about fantasy. It is as much about real life as it is about dragons. That is what makes it as wonderful and relatable as it is!
This book is perfect for mature YA readers from age 11 on up.

I so enjoy this series. With his anxieties about school, his love for his family’s sled dogs, and his adventures helping his stepmother in her veterinary clinic, Luke Houser is a very believable teenager in the mountainous wilds of Montana. Most of his problems are perfectly normal for a boy
in his circumstances.
So his involvement with the local dragons feels totally natural.
A couple of books ago, Luke and his stepmother met Tabitha, a large red dragon when she had an injury that was not healing and that Oscar, her dragoneer, was unable to treat on his own. Since then Tabitha has invited her boyfriend, whose own dragoneer has died, to move into the neighborhood as well, and they selected Luke to be his new dragoneer. Now Tabitha and her mate, Zagros, have two eggs waiting to hatch. But Luke’s family has to keep the dragons a secret or their lives might be in danger.
The antics of the baby dragons once they hatch, especially the golden boy dragon, Helios (who is all boy too) are just as realistic feeling as those of Luke’s school friends. You get the feeling that dragons could be just as real as broken marriages and sick dogs. And you wonder how the dragons and dragoneers ever got by without good veterinary support for all these hundreds of years. No wonder they’re nearly extinct!

This is a pretty good one! While the third book in the series, I didn't have a problem reading it without having read the previous two. Luke is the focus of the book. He is a typical teenager. He has issues, wants a driver's license, family, friends, animals, the works. He also has an added secret....dragons.
I enjoyed Luke's interactions with the dragons and all they go through. I was invested in these characters and what happened. I found Luke and his family to be realistic as were all the problems (outside of the dragons) that he was having. It is a clean book, which I love, and is just good. I would let my young teen on up read this, I think they would enjoy it!
A 4/5 for me. I plan to share it with my nephews!

I am usually reading at least two books at once but found this one a poor pairing with the PD James mystery I reviewed yesterday. Reading James made this book seem overly simplistic, while going from this book to that, made the James seem almost impenetrably mannered and complex.
Although I can't speak from first hand experience on being an adolescent male, this seems to be a realistic portrayal of coming of age preoccupations and trials--with the added interest of a link with dragons that must be kept secret. Dragons, humans, and sled dogs come to life with equal vividness.

A full 5 teacups for Secrets Abound in Missing Lake by Tanya Fyfe; you and your child will need a lot of tea as this tale will be keeping you up! This story is so rife with adventure as we follow Luke through those awkward, yet, necessary days of adolescence and whilst on his journey we meet a lot of lovely characters that are sure to delight any child. Many youths will greatly relate to Luke and his adventures. Fyfe's writing is impeccable and the characters are well developed and one can't help but stand behind Luke and root him on! I highly recommend this book!

I am glad I got the chance to be introduced to this YA series.
Secrets Abound in Missing Lake is a fun read for young people
and adults too.
The main character Luke is a good kid and could make a good
role model for young people.
I am glad I received a print copy. I will be saving for my grandson for a summer read.
This is a great one to get a print copy and instill a love for reading in children.
